Thought For The Week 15 February 2026

Welcome to our service today focussing on the transfiguration of Jesus on the mountain. No matter how often I study the texts there is always something new to learn it seems. For example, I’ve always understood the main point of the transfiguration was to stress that Jesus and his teaching is more important than that of Moses (who delivered the law) and Elijah (representing the prophets). Christians have understood it this way for centuries and it has contributed to the idea that Christianity is superior to Judaism.

Eugene Park’s commentary points out that the account of the transfiguration doesn’t really support this view. Jesus fulfils the law and prophets but doesn’t replace them. Jesus is in the same company as these heroes of Israel’s story; men who encountered God on the mountain in transformative ways and influenced those who followed after them.  The disciples, Peter, John and James are witnesses to this event and are also transformed by it. And, because of Jesus, anyone can climb a mountain to meet the Lord and thus be transformed. (No actual mountain climbing is needed- this is a metaphor for placing one’s hope and trust in Jesus).

The season of Lent, which focusses us on Jesus’ journey towards the cross, begins this week and you are invited to attend a special Shrove Tuesday ‘pancake, prayer and praise’ gathering at St Stephens, 6:45pm. Lenten studies/contemplations will begin on Thursday 5th March for four weeks leading into Easter. We will conclude with a Maundy Thursday Passover meal (details closer to the time).

Finally, I am delighted to announce that the funding to employ a ‘Wayfinder’ has been approved by Church Property Trustees. This position has been advertised with applications closing on 20 February. Please pray that we will find a suitably qualified and gifted person for this strategic role.

Nga mihi nui,

Brent
