Sermon   Joy to the World

  • Went to Star Wars this week
  • I really enjoyed it.
  • Funny sort of thing to say.
  • What do we mean by joy?
  • Pleasure/happiness/joy
  • What’s the difference?
  • Pleasure
  • _we get for ourselves_
  • Happiness
  • _is dependent on our circumstances_
  • Joy
  • _is from the Lord_
  • Joy
  • wells up within us
  • Bible is full of water images – green pastures, still waters. River of life in the desert.  Come to me all who are thirsty.
  • Joy
  • comes to us in unexpected circumstances
  • Even in the most difficult times, Joy is a gift
  • Joy
  • gives us hope
  • When we are lost in our own hopelessness, joy is like a ray of light, lifting our eyes and leading us on
  • Joy
  • is from the Lord
  • Pleasure is something we get for ourselves
  • Happiness is just what happens to us
  • Joy is something richer, deeper, beyond us and our own means.
  • Joy is from the Lord.
  • I think this is what Mary felt when she sang for joy as she met with her cousin Elizabeth
  • Let’s share those words together now, and may the joy of the Lord be with you this Christmas & always.
