Thought for the Week 2 August 2026

Welcome to our service this week as we kick off our month-long series reflecting on the role of sport in our culture.

Last weekend Catherine and I attended the Alpine Presbytery retreat in Hanmer Springs which was led by Sage Harris from Whakatu/Nelson. One of the topics he spoke about was the need for the church to reclaim play in our lives. Play energises us, unites us and makes us fun to be around. Why can’t church be fun?  I was delighted to hear this because that captures some of what I want to do in this series- to reclaim the joy and fun that sport brings us, to consider the intersection between sport and the gospel and to think about some of the ways sport is corrupted by our fallen nature. Along the way we will hear some great stories from our people of their sporting escapades, and we will also throw in some skill challenges- just for fun!

You will see in the notices that we are planning a commissioning service for Steve McCoy in preparation for his commencement as our Wayfinder for Timaru and Temuka. This will be held at the Enliven centre in the Botanic gardens on 30 August at 2:30 pm. It will include representatives from both parishes and Presbytery. I hope you will make it a priority to attend this significant event in our life and mission.
