Thought for the Week 10 May 2026

Welcome to our service today and happy Mother’s Day to all the mums among us.
Not everyone born is a mother, but everyone born has a mother. That statement sounds more profound than it is! Obviously not everyone born will be a mother. After all about half the population are male and incapable of giving birth. And not all females become mothers for various reasons. But we all share the simple biological truth that we are all born of a woman and we are all mothered in some way. When we are born, we are completely helpless and utterly dependent upon our mothers. Without their feeding, protecting and nurture we would perish. This reality is baked into the created order and I believe reflects the creator’s loving characteristics that seeks the nurture and flourishing of all life and is ultimately expressed in the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, signalling a new day of recreation in which death itself is on notice. On this Mother’s Day, we offer our thanks and appreciation for the care and nurture we received from them and thank God that in our mothers we glimpsed the heart of God.
Our service will be followed by a brief congregational meeting to approve the appointment of Catherine Richardson as an Elder in this parish. We believe Catherine will be a wonderful elder bringing her gifts and talents to the service of this community. Eldership is one way in which our church is nurtured and encouraged, and Catherine will be joining a wonderful group of dedicated folks who serve in this way.
Nga mihi nui, Brent
