Thought For The Week 1 February 2026

Welcome to our service today. After a wonderful three weeks off, it is nice to get back into some familiar routines! I want to especially thank Lois Shipley for her diligent coverage of pastoral needs and services in my absence.
Last week’s service with St David’s was a lovely occasion, although not the sunny picnic weather we were hoping for. Still, it was a lovely service, and I particularly enjoyed the games that were organised prior to sitting down for lunch. I’m sure we will do this again next year.
We spent a week on the West Coast soaking up the scenery and history of the region. Of particular interest was the Pounamu Pathway exhibition in downtown Greymouth/Mawhera which displays the pre-European history of the Māori and especially the importance of pounamu/greenstone, which was prized for its beauty, strength and tool making capabilities. Another highlight was exploring a limestone cave system in the Nile River valley with Underworld Adventures. This guided tour takes visitors through a large cave system to the world’s largest glow-worm colony and finishes with a float down the river on inner tubes. The grandeur of God’s creation in this area takes your breath away.
As we launch into a new year we are delighted to welcome Janessa McCallum to our team in the role of treasurer. Janessa has four children aged 2-13 and with her husband Hamish worships at Connect. She is being coached in the role by Rose.
Nga mihi nui,
Brent Richardson
