Thought For The Week 15 June 2025

Welcome to our service today. It’s Trinity Sunday, a day when traditionally the Church has celebrated the God who is revealed as 3 in 1; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We probably don’t lose much sleep over trying to figure out how God can be one (monotheistic) but at the same time made up of 3 distinct persons, but in the 4th century long protracted debates were had over this, sometimes ending in violent conflict! They were trying to get their heads around the reality of God who was revealed by Jesus, who referred to him as Father, and also the lived experience of the Holy Spirit at work in their lives. They finally settled on the formula familiar in the Nicene Creed: “We   believe in God the Father Almighty… We believe in the Lord Jesus Christ eternally begotten of the Father…We believe in the Holy Spirit…who proceeds from the Father and the Son…”

Today we are reflecting on Proverbs 8 which speaks of the Holy Spirit as Wisdom and is personified as a woman. We seem to be living in an age of great foolishness, so it is  timely to consider the wisdom God has for us. The folly of the world leads to destruction and chaos, but the wisdom of God brings forth new creation by the Holy Spirit.

Catherine and I will be heading away at the end of this week for a holiday in Queensland, returning on 2 July. Next Sunday Steve McCoy will be preaching and Grant Holland the week after that. If you have any pastoral needs, please contact Lois Shipley in the first   instance.

Ngā manaakitanga,

Brent
