Thought for the Week 1 June 2025

Today we are reflecting on a cracking story from Acts 16; Paul and Silas in prison. A hallmark of the gospel of the kingdom of God is that it brings freedom to those who embrace the message of Christ, and this story demonstrates 3 kinds of imprisonment and how the Holy Spirit brings freedom. First is the slave girl who is not free by virtue of her slavery but also because she is controlled by a spirit of divination. When she sees Paul and Silas, she knows they are from God and pointing the way to salvation, but she is not free to enter this until Paul evicts the evil spirit in Jesus’ name.
Next, we have Paul and Silas, imprisoned unjustly for setting this slave girl free. They are beaten and bound in the inner part of the prison, yet their hearts are free. We know this because their response to this unfortunate circumstance was to pray and praise God all night long. True freedom is not determined by the outward circumstances but by the condition of our hearts.
The jailor is under a different kind of imprisonment; he is trapped by obligation. When the earthquake struck and the doors opened, he assumed all the prisoners would have escaped and so great was the bondage of his obligation to keep them locked up he was about to take his own life until Paul intervened. No one had escaped because they were enthralled by what Paul and Silas were saying and saw the power of God at work in them. The jailor likewise comes to believe in Jesus and he and his household are baptized to live in the joy and freedom of Christ.
Is there something holding you in bondage? The good news is there is nothing that Jesus can’t set you free from.
