Thought For The Week 23 July 2023

Welcome to our services today. Those attending St Stephen’s might have noticed something missing as they approached the church; the row of Silver Birch trees that lined the southern boundary were removed on Thursday morning. These trees had been a feature of the property for many years but due to repeated pruning to keep their branches clear of the power lines they had become diseased and had reach the end of their lives. While it is sad to see them go it also gives opportunity for something new to take their place, as indeed the three kowhai planted by the national moderator.
I’m always amazed at how quickly a tree can be removed almost without a trace through chainsaws, chippers and stump grinders. They take years to grow and can be gone in minutes! This reminds me of James 4:14: “What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes”. The bible sees time in terms of eternity which gives us a different perspective on the relative shortness of our lives.
Rory, Luke, Helen, Joy and Janie are attending the Presbytery retreat in Hanmer Springs this weekend. This is an opportunity to be inspired, refreshed and connect with likeminded folk from around the presbytery. The retreat will focus on the story of Hagar who was the handmaid of Sarah who bore a son to Abraham but was sent away. It will be interesting to hear how this story speaks to us today.
Blessings
Brent
