Thought For The Week 31 July 2022

When a place receives 4 months of rain in a couple of days it makes you question what is going on with the weather! And when the temperature in the UK pushes beyond 40 degrees you have to think global warming is no longer theoretical! I’ve heard people say ‘don’t worry about climate change because sea level rise happens very slowly’. Maybe. But what we are seeing is the increase of extreme weather events, especially in places that are accustomed to stable and predictable weather patterns. These extreme events have the ability to seriously disrupt our lives beyond the inconvenience of a flooded basement.
In the face of this we might become fatalistic, like Private Frazer from Dad’s Army who was always heard saying “We’re doomed!” But problems can usually be addressed and solved- even overwhelming ones like climate change. Which is why I’ve become interested in a new church movement known as Eco Church NZ which seeks to raise awareness and action of environmental issues and how we collectively might work to restore the balance and be the solution instead of contributing the problems. Eco church are hosting conversations on Zoom over the next 2 Monday nights which I will be joining. If you’d like to join me you can register here: https://www.ecochurch.org.nz/events
