Thought For The Week 17 April 2022

We come to Easter in the midst of yet another season of uncertainty.

Has Omicron peaked in our town?

Will we stay well or become unwell?

Is there light at the end of the tunnel, or is there still a long road ahead?

We cannot easily see the way ahead.

So how do we cope in the middle of all this?

It is tempting to grasp hold of something that will give us certainty. Anything that will give us certainty:

If we get “back to normal” then everything will be OK.

If we lock everything down until the danger is gone, then everything will be OK.

The problem is, the brokenness of this world is bigger than our attempts to control it.

This is true in all areas of life: health, family, neighbourhood, nation. We are small beings in a big world.

So how do we get through?

Let us listen once more to the words of Jesus in Gethsemane “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” – Luke 22:42

Jesus suffered death on the cross that he might lead us into new life. Every time we are faced by a brokenness that we cannot overcome, it is like a little death. But just as Jesus brought us all of life as He conquered all of death, Jesus invites us into small victories of life as we are burdened with the petty deathliness of this world.

Find the little glimpses and moments of life, and goodness, and grace that are offered to you.  This is what will lead us through uncertain times. More so than any “certainty” that we can grasp for ourselves.

May the God of Grace be with you in this Easter season.
