Thought For The Week 2 August 2020

This week I’ve been sharing about being conformed into the image of Christ. It’s a funny word, “conformed”. We tend to associate it with conformity, or lack of individuality. That’s not what Paul means when he uses the word. The word that Paul uses in Romans 8:29 when he describes us as “conformed to the image of the Son” means that we are made complete, we find our deepest essence, we become truly ourselves when we are shaped by the life of Jesus.
In contrast, the word used in Romans 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” means something quite different. The pattern of the world does not lead to our truest selves, but twists us into a superficial caricature of who we really could be.
As a vine in a garden is shaped by its environment, so are our lives. Some things will twist us and damage us, while others will strengthen us, and lead to fruitful abundance. I invite you to prayerfully reflect on the things that are shaping your life at this time. Are they forming you into someone beautiful and true? Or are they twisting you away from your truest self? Perhaps you have a trusted friend who you can discuss this with, and pray together. Brent and I are also always willing to pray with you, and to help you reflect on your spiritual journey.
May the light of Christ warm your hearts and form you in His ways.
